– We took the U19 World Cup silver, played in the Eurobasket quarterfinals in 2013 against France but playing Eurobasket at home would be the peak of my career, says Swedish star Frida Eldebrink.

Since 2004, Sweden has invested exactly the same amount of resources into the women’s national team programme as the men’s. The same amount of preparation days, the same staff, the same daily allowance, accommodation, travel arrangements, and marketing budget. It has paid off. After the breakthrough of super twins, Frida and Elin Eldebrink, talent just keeps coming. Amanda Zahui, Farhiya Abdi, Klara Lundquist are just three of many international players from Sweden. In the latest qualifying game at home versus Croatia, the women’s team draw a record attendance of 5023 sold tickets with Swedish prime minister Stefan Löfven cheering on from courtside.

– We have to roll our sleeves up and work but with the momentum Swedish basketball is experiencing right now, I’m convinced we will be able to present a very strong bid, says Mats Carlson, president of the Swedish Basketball Federation.

On July 7th FIBA will announce the host countries of the 2021 Women’s Eurobasket.
